Byfield and Smokin' Aces

Last Saturday I performed at a benefit for the victims of the Danvers explosion. It was held at the Byfield Town Hall . A quaint New England meeting house built in the late 188o's. There were quite a few people there for the weather and the admission price. It was a good crowd. I was really impressed with the caliber of talent. There were a lot of graphic designers who play music on the side and they were all really good !
My friend, Lenny Boudreau, put it together. I met Lenny when he had hired Mrs Potatohead for his company Xmas party a few years ago and we did it at Brian Longwell's Wingate theater up in Haverhill. I also worked with Lenny when we did a couple of Brian's sketches up at the Fierhouse Theater in Newburyport.
Lenny introduced the acts, so he was funny but he wasn't really doing a set. I was the only non-musical act. I couldn't get the microphone out of the stand. It was wrapped really tight. I had worked on my material and figured I had about 10-15. I got flustered by the mike stand and then I started yammering really fast. It went okay and I got some good laughs. I did not leave my body in the middle of the set, but I was talking really too fast and that cut my time in half . It was okay, but I think I could have done a little better if I had just slowed down ! Ah well . . . ..
Last night , Kiki and I went to see Smokin Aces a Paul Carnahan film. We really liked it. It's not the kind of film that will get any Oscar nods, it was just a lot of fun. A lot of characters and gun fights . Almost everybody ends up dead by the end of the film. Though , really it was great rollicking good fun.
On another note, I am having trouble getting into my website to change the text. I'm not lazy, it just won't let me in.
That's it for today.

Cat's Paw

Our cat is now 5 years old. His name is Tom Brady Dwyer. Yes,he is named after the football player. Mum named him. He is a good boy and my Mother and I adore him. He is mostly orange tabby with a white undercarriage. He is also double-pawed.
We've had double-pawed cats before, but we've never had one who kept growing more fingers. Also, he won't let us clip his nails. So, very so often, his claws grow into the pads of his feet. Which is what happened recently. He started hobbling around, on and off , around Christmas. He's been a 3 legged cat for the better part of the last 10 days. He is very ornery when it comes to getting into the box to go to the Vet. I am the annointed cat grabber because once my Mother gets down on the floor to grab him, she can't get back up without using her hands which would otherwise be holding the cat. He scratches, really well, to get out of my arms to avoid getting into the box. Consequently, we are both reluctant to make appointments for him because we can't be sure we can get him into the carrier in time to make an appointment.
My mother's friend Ellie suggested we throw a towel over him to keep him from scratching. That is what we tried yesterday and it worked ! He was not happy. I got down on the floor with him while we waited for Mum to get the car. He was growling and yowling and I felt bad that he was in such distress. But I knew he needed the care of a vet. He was only going to get worse.
When he got home, he slipped into my brothers room since my brother had nothing to do with his abduction and would be safe hiding in his room.
Today , the cat is much happier. He let me brush him and he is prancing around on all fours. He threw up all the medicine Mum gave him this morning. I wiped it up . There is nothing worse that stepping, barefoot, into cat puke. He is fine now. As are we.

Comedy Last Night

Despite the fact it was a Division Championship game, there was a show at the Comedy Studio last night. Not a bad size, either ! Doug Chagnon hosted the show. He is the comic in residence this month . I thought he did a really good job. I like Doug. The first act up was "The Outtakes" a sketch comedy group. They insisted on going first, and then they left. Poor sportsmanship in my book . They did okay, but we were all swimming up stream last night.
Then me. I had worked on my set , I had made an effort to focus in and I tried to have a good attitude about the size of the audience. They were good natured, but quiet. I didn't try any new material. What I had prepared, frankly aren't "jokes" yet, so I decided against the new stuff. I felt good. They laughed, but nobody busted a capillary from laughing too hard during my set.Rick wasn't monitoring the time, I was waiting for the blue light. I went over time. Not because I was all uppity and entitled. I honestly thought I hadn't done my time.
Since a couple of comics had cancelled, a couple of "Special Guests" dropped in. Maria Ciampa went after me. Some pupils from a workshop she had just taught also showed up , and paid, so they were helpful to have in the audience. Maria did a good job. I think she was working on some new material . Good for her ! Shane Mauss also went up , also working on new material. He always makes it look so effortless.
There were a couple of newbies, and , they brought more audience. I would sneak downstairs ,every so often, to see how the Pats were doing. Mostly good. Maggie MacDonald closed the show. I really like her material.
It was very cold yesterday and there was a major sporting event being televised. On my way to the Studio , there was no traffic. There was more on the way home.

Dang It !

I had posted anew on Wed. or Thursday and I had trouble posting. Like last time, I hoped that it would show. Alas, I was wrong. The missing entry was titled "The Technology Twist". I have no idea where it went. I updated my activities.
I saw Children of Man on Tuesday and I attended the Museum of Fine Arts Fashion installation on Wed. My friend Carol and I went to Betty's Wok and Noodle afterward. It was really freakin' cold. We walked up Huntington Ave. towards the restaurant.
I'm not feeling too confident that this blog will make it to the net.
My plans got messed around ysetreday and I think I pissed a friend off. I ended up going to my newly married friemd's house for dinner and then the three of us watched "The Illusionist" with Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Beil . It was very good, but I thought it was slow to get going . That's probably what was needed , given the story.
I'm doing stand-up tonight at the Comedy Studio. I am looking forward to it. It's going to be tough competition , though. The Pats are playing tonight. It's going to be tough for me to concentrate. Ah well , it's always something . . . . .

It's A New Year

Sorry It's taken so long to post. Through a combination of scheduling and another slow spell with the computer, I have just not had enough attention available to sit down and post something.
I worked the booth New Year's Eve and went out to dinner with my newly married friends and a married gay couple of their's . Yup, I was the only "Single". They invited me back to their house where yet another couple was joining them. I went home. I was so tired from working. I was asleep by Midnight and that's all right with me. It was a lot different than last year's New Year's eve. That's the past, on with the future !
I've performed stand-up a couple of times so far this month and I must say each time it got better. I had a good set list that I have been working from. I had two sets within a week of each other at the Comedy Studio. The second definitely went better than the first . I did the All Asia, new night and new time. I was really tired. I had taken a nap that day and didn't want to leave the house when I woke up , but I did. Kris Earle was there, he did great . I did pretty good. Only one new line, still a little bit clunky. When I get the wording down, it's going to fit nicely. Last Thursday, I went up to Lew's and I think that was the best of the lot. I got off to a sloppy start , but when I got going , it was great . No I didn't do my entire set list , but I wasn't fumbling and I had a lot of energy and I think the audience appreciated it. Out of the blue , Kris gave me my old introduction "She works all over the place. She used to work at the bank, now she works at the record store ". I was floored and I really appreciated it. There was a real laugher in the audience, turned out he was a comic, PJ Brown. However, we all loved his laugh. What a kid !
Domestically, I've been plodding along. I cleaned the bath room New Year's Day. I cleaned the toilet agian yesterday. I just recently got a handle on the laundry, but I'm still slogging through clutter. I took a class at the Boston Center for Adult Education last week "The Spirit of Getting Organized". The biggest thing I took away from the workshop was that we have a lot more stuff coming at us in the modern environment-between junk mail, spam and telemarketers-there's just a lot more that is trying to grab your attention and no wonder it makes it hard to concentrate to get organized. I 've made one trip to Goodwill so far this year and I have another bag ready to go. The trailer in Arlington won't be open until tomorrow.
I've seen some pretty crappy movies so far. The Holiday, The Good German and the Good Shepard. Though the images from the Good Shepard are still with me, so I may have to re-asses my opinion on that one. The Good German dealt with the same time frame, historically, but I don't like this trend toward the subtle reality of human beings. We're fallible and self centered and self seeking. Yeah , I get it. Maybe more so than others. I want to have a catharisis when I go to the movies. Maybe it's just too much of the same thing and I'm weary of it.
That pretty much brings me up to date. I did two loads of laundry yesterday and mostly just layed around the house. I didn't write a thing . Maybe this week , I'll get something done.
