Suit Up

So, I 'm driving between jobs today-I'm going from the engineering firm to the drug store-and I check my messages. There's a call on there checking my availability to do stand-in work tomorrow on the Bruce Willis film that is here. I have to pull over, because I want to be able to think straight. I missed the call by 10 minutes. I know I have to act fast because they're going to call somebody else soon. I call the place I'm working tomorrow, the boss is at a meeting. Dang ! What am I gonna do ?
I call the casting company back and tell them I can do it- without talking to my boss. We'll work it out somehow. It's in Hopedale. No. I don't know where Hopedale is, but I will find out by tomorrow. I ask the girl if it's a man or a woman I will be standing in for -I'm pretty big these days. I'm "movie" big , but if you saw me on the street you might think I could lose a few pounds. I'm standing in for a woman. I don't know who. I'll find out tomorrow.
I like doing stand-in work because you get to be up real close and see the action. But, you don't have to hang around with the rest of the extras. What I really mean is . . . I am not available to any crazy person who thinks I'm interested in hearing why it's only a short matter of time before they become a star. Me? I'm working for scale and I 'm pretty happy to do it.
For no reason in particular, I think it's going to be a short day.
In the meantime, I was able to connect with my boss and she couldn't have been nicer about it. God Bless her for understanding a middle-aged woman who still dreams of shooting for the stars. No, I don't have a lot of dreamy thoughts about being a huge star, but I'd be pretty happy just to be a regular working actress.

You mean the movie Fame was wrong, and we're not all going to be stars?

Wow. That makes me really re-think my life right now.

By the way, I work with a former child actor, who had some success. Based on him, I'd say success in your 40s or working for scale is a better trade off. (But, then again, he pissed me off this morning.)
